I don’t know why I’m so surprised about the arrival of Autumn every year. Actually, I suppose it’s not Autumn’s arrival, but rather Summer’s departure that catches me off guard. As much as I can totally get on board with the chunky knits, hearty bowls of root vegetable stew and roaring log fires, I largely see these as diversion tactics that are put in place to help us deal with the loss of summers endless bounty. And although I understand that without the long dark winter months, we perhaps wouldn’t appreciate the first signs of Spring in quite the same way, it still feels a little daunting to be sitting here mid-September, looking towards winter and knowing what a long time off that is.
Sorry – I’m getting all Jon Snow on you now. Come to think of it, if Jon Snow was walking round Stamford in one of those big fur coats telling us all winter was coming, maybe I wouldn’t be dreading it quite so much…
Essentially, what I’m trying to say is, we all have our seasons, and summer is mine – so I made a little playlist to mourn its end. As always, it’s an eclectic mix with some oldies, some newbies and some dam- goodies. Sorry about the swear words. Who knew the angelic voices of the staves could utter the word f*** so many times in one song – it’s so lovely though I couldn’t leave it out. And yes, I know there are two Elbow tracks; I couldn’t pick.
